Studio, based on the regulations regarding UGM’s Organizational Structure and Work Procedures (SOTK), is used to conduct educational, research, and community service activities, and is categorized as or equivalent to a laboratory (closed/open), workshop, practice space, monitoring station, or other equivalent types. For the field of architectural science, the studio is not merely a supporting facility, but plays a highly important role in delivering high-quality architectural education.
In the Studio courses for Architecture, the Master Program in Architecture Study Program involves the four Academic Competence Groups (KBK) in DTAP, namely:
- KBK Architectural Design
- KBK History, Theory, Criticism, Conservation of Architecture and Urban Design (HTC-AUD)
- KBK Housing and Settlement Architecture
- KBK Architectural Building Technology
Each KBK has designed its substance according to the intended graduate learning outcomes. In the Studio 1 course for Architecture (6 credits), students may choose 2 KBKs of interest. Each student will participate in both KBKs within the Studio 1 course throughout one semester (each KBK carrying 3 credits). Meanwhile, in the Studio 2 course (6 credits), students may choose to join 1 KBK for one semester and undertake internship-based research with one lecturer.
In addition to Studio, there is the Architectural Scientific Insight course (3 credits), which consists of KBK-based courses. A KBK-based course is one conducted by the four KBKs, whose substance represents the core material of the respective KBK’s field of knowledge and must be mastered by graduates who take interest in that field. In the Architectural Scientific Insight course, students are free to choose and take KBK-based courses according to their interests.
